Who We Are

Hayley Johnson

Rākis is a San Francisco-based design-build studio known for integrating work across the disciplines of interior, furniture, and graphic design. The firm is focused on building and furnishing elevated residential and hospitality projects throughout the Bay Area, and beyond.

The studio was founded in 2019 by principal designer, Hayley Johnson, who operates as a sole-practitioner. Formally trained as an interior architect, her values are rooted in sustainability and collaboration, both with her clients as well as with like-minded artists and artisans who share the same high level of standard when it comes to prioritizing quality materials, exceptional craftsmanship, and precise attention to detail.

Prior to starting her own company, Hayley spent nearly a decade in the world of wine—a professional odyssey that ultimately afforded her the ability to connect with nature and travel the world. This wanderlust led her to explore the rich tapestry of over thirty countries and infused her creative spirit. As a designer, her well of inspiration lends tremendous depth to the meticulous curation of forms, colors, materials, and textures throughout the design process.

Above all, she believes your space should tell your story.

Welcome, friends. We’re so glad you’re here.

“Rachis (ray.kis) is a word I discovered when I was young and wild and free, working on a biodynamic vineyard in the lower South Island of New Zealand. In viticulture, it’s the main stem in a cluster of grapes. Anatomically, it’s a spine. For me, it’s the integrity and conceptual underpinnings that support the design process, where beautiful ideas take root.”
